From the BBC highlights, at 3:16, Goodie goes down in the box.

Is that a penalty?

I thought it looked a soft claim at the time. Likewise when Swanson ran into their defender on the edge of the box.

Yes, but penalty or not?

The ref should have given a penalty, as he was impeded.

Never. He probably wanted booking for it too.

Are you mad? Goodie wasn't even touched.

Are you mad? How was Goodie supposed to avoid that failed tackle without falling over?

Nah. Goodie's trailing his legh behind him to make sure there's contact. Much the same as Robson's contrived penalty for Celtic at the same end when he dived over Darren Dods.

No. And he should have been booked for it.
But we had a ref who seemed to be making things up as he went along.
Swanson had just been fouled and so he played advantage. Goodie then went down.
Play should have been brought back, the 'well no.6 booked and Goodie shown a card.
Instead, the ref seemed to decide that Goodie's dive nullified the initial foul, waved play on and booked their no.6 when play next stopped.

That's my take, anyway.

That's interesting. So, let's say Goodie didn't dive but just fell over his own feet. Would the advantage have been lost and should the referee bring play back to the foul on Swanson?

What if Goodrooy made it through on goal but ballooned his shot way over the bar. Take play back to the free kick?

You can be impeded without being touched. And since obstruction these days means either direct free-kick of penalty, then a penalty.

Edit: Similar to the foul on Grosso for Italy's penalty against Australia in 2006. End Edit.

I do say this admitting that I only saw the incident twice (once at normal speed, and one replay), while perhaps under the influence of alcohol.

Indeed. That's more or less what I said in the match thread, though I thought it was a 50/50 decision.

However, given the ref got nearly every other decision demonstrably wrong, I'm minded to consider him a reverse indicator and view it as an unawarded penalty.

Continue his running motion in a natural fashion? If he didn't avoid the failed tackle by doing so and if this led to his being tripped then it's a penalty. Anything else is just prickery.

Refs have contributed to diving by rarely giving penalties when a player has been fouled but stays on his feet. That's one of the reasons why players hit the turf when they haven't been forced to the ground.
