So, good result for United last night followed by an excellent 0-0 between St J's and the Sheep. We have to be very clear favourites for a top 6 spot now: a win over Aberdeen next week would almost certainly lift us too far for them to catch.

Looking at the remaining fixtures of those around the top 6 spot (and assuming Killie are safe):

This weekend:
ICT v Well
St J's v Hibs

Next week
Utd v Sheep
Utd v Hamilton

16th March
Celtic v Hibs
Utd v Hearts

19th March
Killie v Well
Utd v ICT
Hamilton v St J's

2/3 Apr
ICT v Celtic
Well v Sheep
Rangers v Utd
St J's v Killie
Hibs v Hearts

6 Apr
Well v Utd
St Mirren v Sheep

9 Apr
Aberdeen v Hibernian
Dundee Utd v St Johnstone
Hearts v Motherwell
Kilmarnock v Inverness CT

16/17 Apr
Inverness CT v Hearts
St Johnstone v Celtic
Hibernian v Hamilton

I'd take Utd to pick up enough points out of their remaining 8 games: given how many teams are playing each other, 10 points would almost certainly do it, and even give as a good chance of catching Killie come the end.

Anyone still harbouring doubts as to the top 6 placing?

We'll be fine. We have the position and decent enough form to most other to pick up plenty points.

We still look capable of beating most teams too, although not do much rangers Celtic anymore.

The main barrier will be the mass of fixtures in the small space of time. Tired legs.... but better cohesion?

I think 5th is a decent bet for a final standing.

The draws are killing us, and for that, we could not unrealistically finish 7th. Based purely on how the fixtures look, we should safely get at the worst 5th, but Findus is right in that tired legs may result in a few more draws, and that combined with the sheep's improvement, and we could struggle. A lot might depend on the match on Monday. I wouldn't be surprised if they won.

Injuries, rather than tiredness, may prove telling.
Any news on our long-term absentees?

Fifth is more likely but a wee each-way bet on fourth might not be totally outlandish.

I'd be disappointed if we don't finish fourth and I think it's more likely than fifth. Killie have dropped off badly since that big baldy goon has left and Eremenko is a fat arsehole. Wins in the games in hand would take us into fourth and I expect our form to improve as Killie's dips.

They're lost their best player while two of our three most important players have just come back into the side.

Plus, Killie are mostly pish.

So, yeah, fourth. And the cup.

I'd think 10 points from the next 8 pre-split games should get us into the top half. If that isn't enough, either Motherwell or Aberdeen will have to have gone on a great run.

There was a subtle difference in the meaning between the two.

Edit: "not unrealistically" is different from "could realistically" in that the former is ambiguous, while the latter implies a more possible outcome.

Killie are catchable, but we have to start turning draws into wins for 4th to be realistic. The form teams are behind us have played more matches, so it depends if we make the most of our games in hand. Realistically, we'll be 5th or 6th, but the Aberdeen game is huge, expecially for them.

Ha, no, seriously. Similar in a way to the difference of meaning between "I'd like [x] " and "I want [x]".

Now, is this 'that'll be chocolate' a variation on 'I should cocoa'?

I think it suggests that you're handing me something other than chocolate.

I remain unconvinced on the double negative (not that you should particularly care either way, of course).

Personally I think 5th would be a fantastic achievement when we consider the shear number of injuries United have had plus the stop start nature of the season meaning the team will have to play x number of games in a very short period. Anything above 5th will icing on the cake as will a return to Hampden on a certain day in May.

Hang on, you think overtaking a very average Motherwell side over whom we have three games in hand would be a fantastic achievement? Every team gets injuries and others, like Motherwell, have had to make do with much greater hardships (like losing their manager and best player midseason) than us.

We should be vying with Hearts for third. Credit to Hearts that they've gone on such a great run but they're no better than us and we should have put up more of a fight. I'd say this season is an opportunity missed and one which we're unlikely to get again any time soon.

Mind, I'm feeling rather jaundiced about the whole philosophy of the club right now.
