Rangers put out Sporting Lisbon; why is it so hard to be pleased for them?

After what was a pretty breathless second half, I found myself almost willing an equaliser for the gers. An unusual, unsettling experience.
You can only imagine the conflicting emotions when the ball hit the net in added time. But then I thought, 'hey, they're a Scottish team, lots of Scots internationals in there and it's good for the co-efficient. Why shouldn't I celebrate such a result?'.

Then the camera cut to the Rangers end and there, dead centre, was a fat Glasweigan holding aloft a scarf emblazoned with the message, 'NO TIMS IN EUROPE'.

What a c*nt.

This is why. Although you're naively assuming he was from Glasgow. :smack:

I forgot they were playing, never really manager to cheer them on, although am generally not bothered. If they go through, more games to watch with more interest.

Despite the last minute goal, sure it'll be a wonderful tactical planned display from them though...

According to somone on Twitter: Rangers have won only one of their last 17 European games

I'm pleased they made it through. Another two difficult games and major distraction for their creaking and wheezing squad is exactly what Hearts need to catch that shower of wanks and relegate them to 3rd, thus depriving them of even a sliver of a prospect of making the Nearly Champions League. This will make the club unsaleable and harm their long term stability. All good, people: just look at the bigger picture.

That's the spirit, Cob.

Here's a thought - if Rangers were to fold, who would their 'Loyal' start supporting? The closest big non-Cafflik, Proddie-rooted side to (in) their town?

I think it's 1 in the last 19 (since they beat Sporting Lisbon away, in the last 8 of the UEFA Cup in 2008). Later that season they drew twice with Fiorentina, then lost in the Final.

2008/09, they didn't win in either match against mighty Kaunas, and went out.

2009/10, no wins in 6 CL group games.

2010/11, 1 win in 6 CL group games, and no wins in 2 EL games.

I think St. Mirren belong to Rome. Moot point anyway, they won't fold. :(

That was my thinking. Some spillover to the mini-huns of Edinburgh and (some might say) Dundee?

And for any of you with lingering doubts over their supporters...

Only one Champions League place for Scotland next season - so it's win the league or, hopefully, bust for the huns this season.

Well, the same holds: if the added games/pressure means they crash and burn and Celtic run away with the league, so much the better. If they come 3rd it'll then mean an extra (and much earlier) round of qualifying for the Europa too. Them's the vagaries.

Interesting to see that Rangers' late winner and an injury time goal from everybody's favourite turncoat Aiden McGeady looks like it will ensure Scotland have 2 places the following season though -

Hopefully it'll be United and Hearts battling it out for that place though...

Hilarious. I didn't realise they had the internet in the 17th century where these guys are living.
