In the second half, they had to score, they pushed up more and got the goal they needed. The sending off (very very soft and unfair, 1 whole second from the whistle to kicking the ball??) yet again, forced them to defend. No need to score if Barca didn't. When they again, had to score, they pushed up again and created a great chance to, which I reckon Van Persie would have probably scored if he were still on the pitch.
They managed to get into Barcelona's half for the first time (in the second period) 7 minutes in. They then got a gift of an own goal. The way you put it, it seems that Arsenal had been pressing and looking likely to get a goal.

What does one whole second have to do with it? He hadn't wound up his leg for the shot. Google 'Arsenal Barcelona van Persie interview', then go to 1:41 in, and watch it again. From the way van Persie reacts after his boot hits the ball, he knows that his shot wouldn't count even if it went in.

Van Persie would probably have scored - except at 90 minutes, van Persie would've already been subbed by then, as he was short of match fitness.

Van Persie was sent off on 56 minutes. By then, he had barely had a touch, and Arsenal had not had a single shot on goal.

And I reckon that Messi would probably have scored the penalty that should have been awarded in the first half.

By the way, the tie is a two-legged affair. Messi had a good goal unfairly disallowed at the Emirates that would have made it two nil. They also should have had a penalty (and Song sent off) in the second half, which would probably have made it 3-0, and Arsenal dead and buried.

Barca were streets ahead in every single department. Christ, they had more shots at their own goal than Arsenal did!

Nice quote from Guardiola -

Quote:

"Wenger told me to congratulate the referee," said Guardiola.

"The reality is Arsenal were not able to string together three consecutive passes and they were not able to shoot once on goal.
I think they're both right. Barca (P4 W4) certainly deserved to go through, but Arsenal were hampered by that red card. For all Barca's dominance, Arsenal were a Nikolas 'TIMMMMMYYYYYYYYY!' Bendtner f*ckup away from going through - to me, this reflects poorly on Barca's inability to convert dominant possession and regaining possession into goals.

It's a fanny owd game.
Why would Guardiola congratulate the referee for not giving Barcelona a penalty in the first half? ^o)

I wonder if Guardiola told Wenger after the first leg to congratulate the referee. Call it a hunch, but I doubt it, even though they had dreadful decisions go against them at the Emirates.

Of course Arsenal were hampered by the red card. Just like Barca were hampered by not being given a fair goal in the first leg, and two blatant penalties over the two legs. And Koscielny not receiving a second yellow when he gave away the penalty.

Barca's biggest problem is complacency.

Let's not forget that when Arsenal had injuries last season, in the 4-1 defeat, they wouldn't shut up about it. Funny how there's little mention of a central midfielder and a left back needing to play at centre half for Barca, as their regular CBs (Puyol, Pique and Milito) were all unavailable.

Apparently, Arsenal are the first side in the Champions League since 2003 to play a Champions League knock-out game and not have a single shot at goal.

10-6 Barca over the 4 games flatters Arsenal.

Serie A's not had a good season, indeed. But you need to take the rough with the smooth.

Still, the Champions League trophy is currently stored a city that hosts two Italian clubs.

I don't get this media (our English-based media obviously) idea that Spurs are a plucky little team battling against bigger clubs into the later stages. It's exactly the same shit they came out with for Fulham last year and Boro a few years back: these are teams with huge wage budgets spending many millions on top international stars that 99% of teams out there couldn't compete with. Spurs spent some (net) 20m on players last year: that might seem chicken feed to Europe's really big hitters (nearly all the EPL teams and the Spaniards) but, by comparison, AC spent about 18m on incoming men. Other than by recent reputation in Europe this was a fairly even contest.

Fair point, Cob. To provide additional info, the following are rough figures for the total costs £ of the clubs' respective squads:

Man City - 350 million
Real Madrid - 340 million
Man United - 210 million
Inter - 180 million
Spurs - 160 million
Barcelona - 135 million
Milan - 130 million
Arsenal - 100 million

Great game at the Allianz Arena tonight between Bayern and Inter. Great stadium, top atmosphere. End to end with real quality from Eto'o. Why did Barca let him go??

That was to make way for Ibra, I think. To be fair, Barca aren't doing too badly without him

The urge to bring in Ibrahimovic and dispose of Eto'o and €46m seemed to be irresistable.

Guardiola felt that Eto'o was destabilising the dressing room, and that a radical plan B (something different for when the likes of Chelsea are opponents) was required.

Also, Eto'o didn't have that long on his contract left, so the thinking was 'get rid of this troublemaker who's not got that much sell-on value left (the £30 million fee might be overstated), and get in on a long contract the best player in Italy, who will give us a radically different option if/when we need it.

In hindsight, the troublemaker Eto'o was replaced by the troublemaker (guy who didn't fit in to the Barcelona ethic) Ibrahimovic. Ibra, despite not playing for much of the season, still scored 20+ goals (including the winner in the Camp Nou Clasico), and they'll get £20 million back for him.

Now they seem settled with Villa instead of Eto'o or Ibrahimovic. Inter have Eto'o (along with Messi and Ronaldo, the form player in Europe), Barca have Villa, and...erm...Milan have Ibra...everybody's happy, right?

I would also suggest Eto'o's especially happy this season to be playing as a forward, unlike his experience under Mourinho when he was often played as a wide forward and had to do such annoying things as track back and defend....

I can identify with that. Arab FC used to play me wide left in a front three, then moan when I didn't track the full-back. I'm still bitter about that... :smack:

Did you get the chance to prove them wrong by scoring a bucket load of goals the following season from up front as well then Micky? ;)

On the off-chance you're Homer, I shouldn't have to remind you that I scored every time I played up front. Except the last match I played in.
