Lot of talk about McCarthy and Scotland / Ireland again. Not sure if much has changed, but Levein and Martinez talking about it as if there's something to it, even if both are playing it all down.

I never saw much of a fuss in the first place, he can choose as he pleases, but changing seems a bit strange, given he's played for them before, even if only friendly.

There's not much doubt he's very good player and likley to be even better incoming years, but don't think that's the reason to want him to play for country or not.

Hedging his bets to see who will qualify for the euro's?

He made the decison to play for Ireland when he was still at under 16 level and only qualifies for them through his grandparent so can understand him having second thoughts about a decison he made at a very young age.

Besides Levein will have the Caldwell brothers and Mcarthur bending his ear about it all the time down at Wigan.

Och, I don't care. On the one hand, he's clearly developing into a fine footballer. One the other most of what I remember of his time in the SPL involved diving and whining and over the top cowardly tackles. I do wonder at the mentality of a boy who would forgo his home nation in favour of someone else because of some apparently sectarian sentiment, but I would never criticise him for it: his life, his career, his choice. The whining and diving on the other hand ... bleurgh.

And there you have it.

:hat:

What happened there then?

I don't understand the mentality of someone who would forego the nation of their birth, upbringing, education etc for some misty eyed version of "the ol' country". Up to him, but perhaps he's regretting his somewhat hasty decision made at age 15.

It's like Richard Gough's kid's kid deciding that he wants to represent Sweden.

It makes absolutely no sense, until you realise McCarthy is a Celtic supporter.

It's annoying, but it's his business really. I don't hold it against him. The wee shite.

It's like Matt Elliot playing for Scotland. Nobody complained about that at the time, did they?

OK, bad example. Andy Goram, or Phil Bardsley, or some other better example I can't think of.

It is more like Stuart McCall or Don Hutchison playing for Scotland as they appear to have neglected their country of birth by choice rather than simply by being too pish for them.

Did Goram actively choose Scotland or were England just slow off the ball?

We'd take anyone these days, so you can be sure the Scotland team will following this closely. You can't blame them given the mentality of some of the players who should be first on the sheet, eg. Ferguson and McGregor at the time, texts from Dumbo sayin he's got to paint his granda's shed so he can't play etc. so the honour is mostly lost on these dimwits. Phil Bardsley's dad spent a week in Scotland, so he's in. Why not some wee ned prick.
